The Botswana Football Association (BFA) is in the middle of a recruitment exercise to appoint a new Zebras coach, after the departure of David Bright in February.

Expectations were that Mpote, after a solid COSAFA Cup campaign, where he reached the final, and an unbeaten start to the African Nations Championships (CHAN), might be handed the national team reigns.

But sources close to the matter, said Mpote would stay on in the Zebras set-up, but as assistant coach. “There is no change, Mpote will be assistant to the incoming coach and will be working to ensure that he takes over in a few years,” the source said.

The BFA has shortlisted six candidates for the job, with former coach, Jelusic Veselin, amongst those targeted.

The appointment of the new man is expected by next month, with BFA marketing and public relations officer, Tumo Mpatane urging patience.

“We are still in the process of recruiting the coach. We hope the process will be done in July, but it is important that the public and media are patient with this process as it will be important to deliver the right man for the job,” Mpatane said.

Since he took over in March, Mpote has won four of his six matches in charge, and added the Orange FA Cup on the domestic front, after his Orapa United side humiliated Township Rollers 3-0 in the final.
