The meeting was called to adopt resolutions for June 20-29 full council meeting and also for the town clerk to respond to a number of issues raised by councillors.
“What is the town clerk doing in this council because he told us in June that he is leaving on transfer. We had expected a new town clerk to attend this special meeting. A new town clerk cannot implement resolutions that he was not part of,” Diphetogo ward councillor Tshepo Moloko said.
“The mayor has not told us whether there has been a change or Mathe came to visit us,” he added. Difetlhamolelo ward civic leader, Sesupo Jacobs noted that, “When will the next town clerk come. There should always be a communication when there are changes regarding council management because it even inconveniences us as the councillors.
At first the deputy clerk was fired from work and this council was informed after it demanded answers on whether she has done any crime or not. Only to learn that the officer was simply requesting that she be transferred next to Gaborone because of her health issues but the employer preferred to fire her without listening to her plea.”
Marulamantsi councillor Sergeant Kgosietsile said the current town clerk has failed several times to implement resolutions that councillors took and at the end of the day, it looks like they are the ones failing.
“The councillors keep on preaching and asking similar questions on same issues because the town clerk is failing. It is time you go so that our resolutions can be implemented,” he said.
Special elected councillor Kagiso Ntime stressed that the town clerk is failing to consult most of the time and even to follow the procedure laid out in their act.
“This special full council is called unlawfully because it was supposed to be called after 14 days of the full council. Lets follow the procedure and rules guiding us,” he said.
Mathe laughed off the civic leaders’ charges, stating that, “I don’t control my employer. But I can only tell you that my transfer is going to be delayed for the following reasons; I am in a committee doing events for BOT50, preparing for independence celebration and also in town planning for Gaborone.
I cannot go and leave all these things hanging. My departure will be known if my employer says I should vacate the office.”
