The BNF central committee resolved that all social media platforms used in the build up to the congress should immediately be disbanded. “If administrators of those accounts do not do so, then stern action will be taken against them by party leadership,” BNF secretary general, Moeti Mohwasa said yesterday when addressing the media.

The BNF central committee met over the weekend, the first meeting since it was elected last month.

The party secretary general said all social media platforms operating under the name of the party should be supervised and administered by the publicity secretary.

“Failure to do so will be in breach of the code of conduct and constitution of the party as it will be an act of factionalism, which is a punishable offence,” he said.

In addition, Mohwasa said communication to the media should be done through the publicity secretary.

“The central committee has adopted the names suggested for sub-committees and soon the members of those committees will start their work. On the issue of additional members to the central committee, party president has requested members of the central committee to suggest names to him. He will choose the names of additional members after we had made proposal to him,” he said.

He said his party had also decided that constituency registers be the ones used as voter’s rolls in the party primary elections and therefore constituency secretaries would have to update their registers.

“The secretaries will update and reconcile it with those from the party office,” Mohwasa said.

BNF secretary general said they reject the use of electronic voting machines (EVM) in 2019 elections, unless safeguards and audit trail accompany its use.

“Some of the recommendations are that counting of votes be conducted at each polling station and results be transmitted to the counting centres after the candidates or their counting agents have appended their signatures confirming the authenticity of the results,” he said.

He said if the Voter Verifiable Paper Audit Trail (VVPAT) produces the opposite results from what the voter has chosen, such machine should be set aside as corrupt and be replaced with the corrupt-free EVM.

Mohwasa indicated that all opposition parties would undertake a march on September 17 to protest against the use of EVM, the crisis in Ministry of Education and Skills Development and abuse of state media.
