The practitioners have been on a weeklong training, which started on June 16 at the Church’s Gaborone branch under the tutelage of medical practitioners from the church in the United States of America.

The US practitioners are part of the Church’s LDS charity drive.  The training is a partnership between the Church and the Ministry of Health and Wellness, which has been ongoing for close to seven years.  Speaking at the closing ceremony of the training programme on Friday, deputy permanent secretary of Health Services Management Dr Morrison Sinvula said the training would equip participants with necessary skills to save the lives that would otherwise be lost.

“Our population cannot afford to be losing babies at birth as we are a small population that needs to grow,” Sinvula remarked.  He urged the participants to always be available to put their skills to use whenever the need arises. The Church gave the Ministry bags with some of the equipment used in the training.

One of the trainers, a medical practitioner in the US, Dr Ben Hart said the equipment is meant to be used to train more practitioners by the participants who have acquired the skills from his team. The participants came from medical centres from around the country.
