Busy season for tennis

For the Under 14, Denzel Seetso is preparing for the European tour in July and August.

Seetso has been invited by the International Tennis Federation (ITF) and Confederation of African Tennis (CAT) to join the ITF/CAT 14 and under team that would participate in a series of five European tournaments over two months.

Botswana Tennis Association (BTA) vice president, Oaitse Thipe told Mmegi Sport that the Davis Cup team has been preparing for the tournament since last year by playing in the Africa Cup in November. “The team has been in camp for the last five weeks. The Davis Cup is the World Cup of tennis and it is for senior players and we are in group four with Cameroon, Rwanda, Ghana, Uganda, Congo and Ivory Coast,” he said.

Thipe said the intention is to gain promotion to group three.  The Under 14 team was in Kenya and Zimbabwe for the World Junior Tennis (WJT) qualifiers that were held in Algeria.  Seetso scooped a gold medal in the individual tournament in Algeria.

Thipe said the Under 14 is on the court today in Morocco and the best team qualifies for the WTJ. “Botswana comes in seeded in position three and the best team would book a space in the final scheduled for Czech Republic in August,” Thipe said.

The teams are as follows: Davis Cup: Matshediso Malope, Thato Holmes, Lefa Sibanda, Aobakwe Lekang and Petrus Molefhe. Under 14: Seetso, Mark Nawa and Seabo Saleshando. Phenyo Matong (coach).
