Over 1,600 Teachers Promoted Recently

The MoESD’s Permanent Secretary Theophilous Mooko  told a BOSETU Congress in Palapye where he was invited to update the congress regarding what government has in store for the teachers.

While accepting that challenges remained in the provision of accommodation for teachers countrywide, Mooko told the BOSETU congress that between  2014 and 2015  financial year, some 628 houses were availed, with a further 352 housing units being built for this financial year, and another 130 housing units to be delivered next financial year.

On the burning issue of subject specialisation raised by the teachers’ trade unions, the permanent secretary noted that  government has been pursuing the  solution resulting in the pilot project rolled out to  309 primary schools around the country between 2007-2011.

Commenting on the issue of teachers’ relations with the Botswana Examinations Council on coursework assessment and invigilation, Mooko said it would be very important to  explore long term approach to this matter in order to do away with the current adhoc arrangement .

Mooko  said the primary school education needs to  accommodate both generalists and  subjects specialists  for lower and higher classes respectively, adding that there is also a need to  reform teacher education  in order to ensure that the system produces subject specialists who can function effectively at primary school level.

On dual pathways, another proposition from the teacher trade Union,  the  Ministry has acknowledged  that the introduction of dual pathways  could  help to assist in easing pressure currently experienced at Form 4 and Form 5, But we need to concentrate on building a credible vocational route so that learners leaving Form 3 can confidently choose”, Mooko added.
