Mpene won the tournament with 8.5 points out of nine and did not register a loss for the entire tournament.

The player, a pupil at Letlhakeng Primary School secured himself a slot at the World Schools Championships in May 2020.

He is now rated 1328 in the latest FIDE World ratings.

Botswana Chess Federation (BCF) spokesperson, Kutlwano Tatolo said the player stands a chance of getting a title at the World Schools.

“It is unfortunate that there were no titled players in the tournament. Otherwise Mpene would have got one (title),” she said.

Tatolo described Mpene’s win as a wonderful achievement. Meanwhile, the player's mother, Kelebogile could not hide her excitement.

She also appreciated the support from Mpene's sponsors, Desai Law Group. Mpene arrives in Gaborone on Friday.

A welcome ceremony will be held for him at Riverwalk Mall.
