Although at the time of his retirement he said he would have loved to continue playing for a while longer, the former midfield maestro said following the diagnosis, the doctor’s orders left him with no choice but to hang up his boots.
Since joining the Ostriches from BDF XI two seasons ago, Boy-Machesa, as Motsepe is affectionately known, has established himself as an integral part of the Ostriches. Last season he guided the side to a historic Mascom Top 8 Cup.
His guidance on the pitch was recognised at the club’s end of the season awards when he was named the most disciplined player.
Club spokesperson, Tebatso Hule said the player’s abrupt retirement came while they still enjoyed his services, but considering the seriousness of his condition they had to look at other alternatives. He said after restructuring they named Motsepe the team’s administration head.
“Motsepe has been a loyal servant since he arrived,” Hule said.
“His football was cut short due to a health condition while we still needed his services and we could not just call off our relationship. “After formalising our structures as per the requirements of club licensing we resolved to appointing him the administration head and he will be reporting to the board,” he added.
Motsepe said he appreciates his new role.
“This is great. I really appreciate the gesture,” he said.
“It shows that the team really valued me. I have been with the team for a short stint and for the team to show so much devotion is overwhelming.”
Motsepe said unlike other players and being a short-tempered player himself, he never really saw himself as a coach in the future. He said football administration has always been at the back of his mind.
“This (administration) is what I have always considered after active football. It will be nice to help the team behind the scenes.
“I have basic knowledge in administration and I believe I will learn to enjoy my new role and with a few supplementing course I will get there. It’s a matter of adjusting,” he said.
