Echoes Of (Un)Silenced Voices Opens At Thapong

The exhibition will display new approaches to creative art making in Botswana and encourage public participation through social dialogue on multiple emerging issues.
Tumelo Bogatsu, Legakwanaleo Makgekgenene and Kago Monageng will showcase their new artworks at Thapong Visual Art Centre and some key locations around Gaborone, including Gaborone Bus Rank, Main Mall and CBD.
In an interview, Thapong’s Resident Curator Tumelo Thutuka said the objective of the project was to provide an experimental and flexible platform for artists. He also said the platform should provide results by creating new exciting artworks that propagate dialogue and public participation. “Echoes of (Un) Silenced Voices is a multi-facetted exhibition full of ambiguities that speaks of both suppression and freedom [being silenced and unsilenced].”
Alongside Thuthuka, Cardiff based Melissa Hinkin was selected as a co-curator to mentor participating artists and guide them through developing their innovative work.
The process of collaboration on Echoes of (Un) Silenced Voices has not only produced thought provoking art. It has sparked valuable connections between Tswana and UK creatives.
This inaugural and an historic creative arts project aims to establish and empower the selected artists. The new creative and innovative will reach out to new audiences. The artists were awarded P30000, to develop and produce new artworks for the exhibition. The exhibition will run from July 19 - August 16, 2019.
