Police bust 24 poachers at Lake Ngami

Hulela said the fishers, who include a group of men and women, were arrested by Wildlife scouts in the Okavango Delta. He said the group had camped in a tourism concession area and fished without a permit. Hulela explained that stacks of dried and fresh fish were recovered from the mob as evidence. He further explained that three vans including two landcruisers and a Hilux that the group used have been impounded as evidence.
Hulela revealed that the group was given varying fines ranging from P200-P300 per person after they pleaded guilty for fishing without a permit.
Illegal fishing, fuelled by big markets for fish in neghbouring Zambia and Democratic Republic of Congo, is ripe in Ngamiland since government outlawed fishing at Lake Ngami. Hulela called on members of the public to desist from illegal fishing operations. “We advise members of the public to follow the right laws for fishing even when they are doing it for business.”
Meanwhile, Hulela said his office has registered two cases of suicide at Sedie and Botshabelo wards. He said in Sedie, a 23-year-old man was discovered by his mother hanging from the rafters of his bedroom after allegedly committing suicide. He said the man, who used a wire to hang himself, did not leave a suicide note.
In Botshabelo, a 27-year-old man was found by his father hanging with a wire on a mophane tree. He said the man was discovered early around 6am and like in the other case, the man did not leave behind any suicide note. Hulela called on members of the public especially the youth to utilise counselling services when they have problems.
