Dark days: Sankoyo players have gone for six months without pay

According to one player, who chose to remain anonymous for fear of victimisation, the club has not paid them for six months.

“We live on constant promises,” he said. “We have not been paid for the past six months and we are told a similar excuse everyday. We owe rentals and we rely on hand outs from supporters.”

“I stay three kilometres from our training ground and I have to commute everyday. Sometimes I am forced to walk because I can’t afford to pay a combi to training,” he said, adding that if he had a choice he would stop training.

He said the players have written to the club demanding that the committee be dissolved.

“We have written to the committee urging the members to step down as they have failed the team since they assumed office. Maybe new people can bring change,” he said.

The club spokesperson, Phemelo Saleshando said they have received the letter from the players but said he was not in a position to divulge much on the matter since the committee is yet to discuss the issue. However, he said the problem the team is facing is lack of funds.

“We have received the letter but it comes as a big shock,” he said. “We have addressed the state of our financials with the players and they know the budget of the team.

“We have promised them that a large chunk of the prize money will be channelled to their salaries and we had thought we have reached an agreement.

The team does not have money and we are still waiting for the prize money to be released by the sponsor,” he said.

Saleshando said after the committee meeting they will address the supporters in Maun and also take the matter up with the Sankoyo community to help resolve the issue, which he believes is pushed by other people with ulterior motives.
