A police report shows that five people died in road traffic accidents in the just-ended President’s Day holidays as compared to six who lost their lives the same period last year.

The accidents occurred at Rasesa, Gamononyane lands in the Mogoditshane area and Monogeng lands near Artesia. The Botswana Police Service’s (BPS) deputy public relations officer, Near Bagali said for the period under review there was an increase in the total number of road traffic accidents as 228 were registered as compared to the 202 recorded in 2018.

He said a total of 477 drivers were tested for alcohol and 226 of them were found to be above the prescribed limit. He said the total number of serious injuries remained the same at 17 for each period while minor injuries recorded increased from 19 to 22 thereby accounting for 15.8%.

Bagali has, however, raised concern regarding an increase in the number of motorists who continue to commit road traffic offenses such as driving without a driver’s licence, speeding, failure to wear a seat belt, drunken driving and failure to obey traffic lights.
