Addressing a press conference on Monday, BISA northern zone organiser, Modiri Mokobela said the P200,000 sport excellence awards will be the biggest of their three editions to date. “Our athletes outdid themselves in the competitions and it is important that we reward them in the best possible way,” he said.

“We have held these awards since 2014 but this will be the best edition of all. Our plan is to outdo ourselves as our athletes have outdone themselves for the zone in the competitions,” Mokobela said.

He said the awards have been the secret to the zone’s improved success. He said it is through the awards that competition and desire to win to bring results has grown.

“Before the awards we were stuck at position two and sometimes third,” he said. “However, since the introduction of the awards, we immediately shot to position one until now.” He added: “The challenge now is for us not to rest on our laurels but to try and maintain the top position, which is why these awards are important to us and should be improved with time.”

He said the purpose of the awards is to encourage the athletes and the coaches. The awards will cover both the junior and senior secondary schools in the zone. An improved 72 prizes from last year’s 44, worth of P69,000 will be awarded to the coaches and athletes.

The zone has established itself as a focal point of producing and developing the country’s sportspersons of repute.

Amongst sporting personnel who have grown through the ranks in the great north and made a mark in the international competitions are Amantle Montsho, formerly Maun Senior School student, Nijel Amos (from McConnell Senior School), Karabo Sibanda (Tsodilo CJSS), Isaac Makwala, Tracy Chaba, Carlifornia Molefhe and Christinah Botlogetswe.

The awards will be sponsored by Disney Car Rentals and Mokobela appealed to other companies to come on board and sponsor the awards ceremony.
