This is so as they feel that the party would not be stable if elective congress has more than one lobby list.

The Monitor has learnt that some members of the BPF are lobbying Pelonomi Venson-Moitoi to defect to the newly formed party and become its president.

“It would not look good for Venson-Moitoi to be party president when her husband is contesting for a parliamentary seat in Serowe South constituency for another opposition party.

Again our party is still new, we cannot afford to have tensions.

Already we have issues that need the congress to iron them out regarding mekoko,” a source said. “BPF has sympathisers and some of them want to contest as independent candidates and therefore we want the congress to have a resolution on that.

All decisions that might have been taken by the interim committee will be reviewed as well as the party objective.”

Venson-Moitoi’s husband has joined Botswana Movement for Democracy (BMD). The source said some of the issues that they would want to talk about also include areas where they would want to contest at because they only have two months to campaign vigorously.

BPF moved its congress to August 3, 2019 after its supporters asked the interim committee to have a proper congress with registered members and party structures.

“By the end of this week, the party would know the number of existing party structures.

The members will also commit themselves on how they would help the party to have funds and resources for them to campaign fully for elections, but we would not try to stretch ourselves in trying to contest in a lot of areas,” another source said.

For her part, Venson-Moitoi said she was not aware of any move by some BPF members to recruit her into the party and also for her to contest for their party presidency.
