Lucara Awards P30,000 To Diamond-Naming Winner

Tlhabuswe from Gabane emerged victorious after beating over 22,000 entries that entered the diamond naming competition.
Speaking during the naming of the diamond recently, Lucara Diamond Mine CEO Eira Thomas said Lucara and the Karowe Diamond Mine, has had an epic journey.
“In just seven years, we have broken many records. We are the first diamond mining company to incorporate revolutionary XRT technology, which led to the recovery of the 1,109 carat Lesedi la Rona, the world’s second largest gem diamond in recorded history, the 813 carat Constellation, which sold for a world record price and, most recently, the recovery of a 1,758 carat diamond, the largest diamond ever recovered in Botswana and Karowe’s second and 1,000-carat diamond in just four years,” she said.
Thomas said Lucara continues to seek out these types of investment opportunities in Botswana because they believe in this country and want to grow with Botswana as it looks to the future.
Last year Lucara made new investments to help support and grow their business even further. The first of those investments relates to a newly launched diamond sales platform called Clara that uses technology to modernise the diamond supply chain, creating efficiencies and unlocking value for producers and manufacturers alike.
“We have launched Clara here in Botswana using diamonds from the Karowe diamond mine and our ambition is for Clara to become the new standard in global diamond sales, a standard that inspires confidence and transparency throughout the entire supply chain,” Thomas said.
Lucara also continues to invest in new technologies related to diamond exploration. In partnership with Sunbird Technologies, they are using a revolutionary airborne magnetic surveying system to explore vast amounts of prospective territory in Botswana quickly and cost effectively for new diamond deposits.
The same technology has been deployed in Canada with success and we are confident that Sunbird has the potential to make new discoveries in Botswana as well.
