Professor Martin Mokgwathi was appointed acting board chairperson following the resignation of Solomon Reikeletseng early this year. Now eyes will be on Khama as he makes the critical appointments.

Mokgwathi is likely to be retained, but new Women and Sport Botswana (WASBO) chairperson, Matlho Kgosi, will replace his vice, Tshosi Magang. Three board members are government appointees. The term of office for the board comes to an end next Wednesday.

The BNSC is facing a turbulent period with a restructuring exercise likely to result in retrenchments, while some senior employees have quit, at a time when funding is on a decline.

Mokgwathi told Mmegi Sport that he hopes to be appointed, with a new board expected in place by August.  “It is not up to me to decide but the Minister,” he said. “But if I get the nod I would accept. If there are any changes that I want to implement I would do that but if I am happy with the current state of affairs, I would just run with it.”

The Botswana National Olympic Committee president, Colonel Botsang Tshenyego and its chief executive officer, Tuelo Serufho remain on the board. The ministries of Basic Education and Local Government and Rural Development will have a representative on the board.

There is also a representative from MYSC, Paralympic Sport Association of Botswana and two National Sport Associations (NSAs) representatives.

The NSAs have nominated Tshepho Bathai (karate) and Dr Khaulani Fichani (tennis) to represent the affiliates in the board. There is also a position for a technocrat while BNSC chief executive officer, Falcon Sedimo sits on the board as an ex-officio member.
