Old Naledi Soccer Field was filled to capacity on Saturday afternoon as people from Gaborone’s oldest and largest location came to see their favourite artists.

While the mandate of the festival was to celebrate local talent, a number of upcoming artists from Old Naledi and elsewhere were given a chance to impress in front of the audience.

But it was Mafitlhakgosi who made a good impression with their live performance. The group, who got attention after imitating famous local performers, continued what is known of them by giving young performers the lead.

With big artists like Franco having performed earlier, kwasa kwasa was the genre of the day and Mafitlhakgosi showed their versatile nature by sticking to what seemed like a theme. The group then switched the mood to a powerful dance of mpaxanga music. After playing around with different music genres, Mafitlhakgosi then got down to the real business of traditional music and dance. The ever-growing group proved that they are even better performing in front of their home crowd. This year’s famous outdoor music festival was a collaboration between Maitisong and the Ministry of Youth, Sport and Culture (MYSC). While other outdoor shows were held at the Bus Rank and Bontleng mall, Old Naledi Music fiesta continued to be the biggest in terms of attendance. People from other communities were also there to celebrate a festival that has been held annually since 1996. The group made a breakthrough at the Gaborone International Music and Culture Week in 2014.
