Marriage wrecking cases drop in Jwaneng

Jwaneng, being a mining town, has more men than women and women are bound to share partners. Itumeleng is of the view that some men in Jwaneng are not responsible enough to hold their feelings and stick to one partner which also increases the already high incidence of HIV/AIDS.

In 2014, 10 cases of marriage wrecking were registered and the defendants were convicted and fined whereas in 2015 there were only three cases. This year there have been no cases reported and Itumeleng applauded the community for valuing the essence of marriage and family. The youth are the main perpetrators and are often dragged before the courts and fined accordingly because the complainants usually bring compelling evidence and will seek compensation from the defendants.

“It is irresponsible of men to leave their wives at home and look for love outside wedlock. This has a negative impact on children and also a lack of trust for couples. A family thrives on love, unity as well as harmony but the third person will only come in to destroy what has been built,” he advised.

However Itumeleng said there are still cases of cohabitation but are few as compared to the previous years. He said normally one of the partners will report a misunderstanding and seek the court’s intervention for division of asserts or goods they would have bought together.

On other issues, Itumeleng said he is concerned about the unpaid fines at the two kgotlas. He said this renders the court toothless and he called upon the community to pay their fines.
