Instead, the police have issued a warning against the public from making pronouncements on such a sensitive issue before any official comment from authorities.

This came on the backdrop of weekend reports that a group of manual workers found Kerekang’s head at Block 7 bushes on Friday afternoon.

Kerekang was allegedly brutally murdered on July 30, 2018 at Block 3 in Gaborone by her boyfriend, Simon Badisa Kgowe. It is alleged that Kgowe murdered her before cutting off her head and casting aside her body at Maratanang ward in Tlokweng.

BPS deputy public relations officer, senior Superintendent Near Bagali told The Monitor that whilst it was true that something looking like a human skull was found at Block 7, there was nothing yet to confirm that the skull was Kerekang’s.

He said it was unfortunate that people rushed to post such insensitive information on social media before police confirmation. Bagali said the skull has been taken for forensic analysis and results are expected soon.

“Immediately after the manual workers found the sack and noticed what was inside it, they called the police who attended to it and took it to hospital for analysis,” said Bagali.

“It is not true that it is Kerekang’s head, because we are not yet sure whether it’s a human skull or not, but we are investigating and forensic results will tell what it is.

This is a very sensitive and traumatising matter to the family and the nation, but it’s unfortunate that people could make pronouncements without basis. We have engaged experts who will tell us what it is and we will release a statement.”

However, sources at the BPS have told this publication that indeed DNA results confirmed the head to be of Kerekang.
