This charity run known as YCC (Y Care Chairman’s Challenge) is on its second run as one of Y Care Charitable Trust’s fundraising events. In 2015 Modise and Diabetes Association of Botswana conducted a similar campaign from Francistown to Gaborone, where P160,000 was raised and over 1,000 people tested with two people diagnosed with diabetes.

The Grand Finale for the Y Care Chairman’s Challenge will be on Saturday, August 13, 2016, with a 21km half marathon from Gabane Clinic to Airport Junction Mall. The public are encouraged to take part in the last 6km stretch from Molapo Crossing Mall to Airport Junction Mall for a fun run and donating P50 to the cause.

Y Care Charitable Trust is a non-profit making organisation that organises walks in area that have heritage sites of pristine and historic significance in Botswana like Makgadikgadi, Domboshaba, Tswapong (Moremi and Old Palapye), Kgalagadi Sand Dunes, Tsodilo Hills and Gantsi. In addition to these main walks are pre walks that are done within Southern East District (Gaborone and surrounding areas like Manyana, Mogonye, Otse, Molepolole, Matsieng, Kolobeng, and Tlokweng) as a stimulant for the main walks.

These walks are mainly done to raise money for charitable purposes, to expose walkers to the beauty of our country, to teach them the history and expose them to the cultural diversity of Batswana. Since its establishment, Y Care Charitable Trust has donated over P4 million to charity organisations that focus in areas of women, youths, art, sports and culture.

Y Care would therefore like to appeal and challenge organisations and individuals to sponsor and or donate funds to this good course. cerns, the marathon’s public relations officer Kennedy Dudzayi apologised to the concerned athletes, noting that they did not deploy enough marshals at intersections. “We need to train more volunteers on how to best serve athletes in order to rectify the situation next time,” he highlighted.

For the first time in the history of the marathon, Botswana National Anti-doping Association tested athletes for performance-enhancing drugs with the results expected in two weeks time. Dudzayi explained that the decision to test athletes for drugs aims at encouraging them to desist from using drugs, highlighting that the marathon’s champions may get a chance to compete in international races. Only 800 out of the 2,000 athletes registered.

Dudzayi said next year, they will embark on an aggressive advertising of the marathon in order to attract more athletes, noting that it will be easy as they now have a sponsor, Orange Botswana.
