CAB executive director, Boitumelo Molefhe-Ndebele told Sport Monitor that Jaguars becomes the first club to partner with them in the 21 years that the organisation has existed. She said maybe it was because of the visibility of the Cancer Association.

“Maybe it is because the government has taken a step of recognising Non-Communicable Diseases (NCDs) as a major factor in causing harm to our population. The announcement was made during the budget speech in February. It now going to become policy, they are going to budget for it just like HIV/AIDS. It is a process that would not happen overnight,” she said.

Molefhe-Ndebele said CAB covers all cancers and they want to reach out to different sectors of the community. She said the partnership with Jaguars is a good platform not just to educate and disseminate information but to promote early screening and detection. She added that a lot of men do not visit doctors for testing but they should take time and do that.

“Yes you can play sport but it is important to be healthy. We want to build a relationship with sport, maybe not well known among the communities, people do not know much about cancer but it is killing them. The most common cancers here is cervical and breast cancer in women and prostate cancer in men,” she said.

Jaguars’ chairperson, Bryn Williams said they want to lead by example, trying best practices not only in rugby but sport in general. He said they had to venture in community service and social responsibility. He said they want to create a relationship with CAB and become their brand ambassadors.

LKC managing director and Jaguars patron, Gary Wills said rugby is not all about boots and alcohol. He said professional players do not drink because there is more to the sport than alcohol.  Wills said they are passionate about rugby and it is part of their brand. He said they have invested a lot of resources in it and it started as a vision a few years ago.

“We are hungry for success and in the past five years of our existence we have made a lot of progress. It is about our winning but about building something. We would succeed and become champions one day,” said Wills.

Meanwhile, LKC pledged P5, 000 towards CAB while Nashua Botswana pledged to install Wi-Fi at CAB office.
