The new Sefalana Shopper, Shamukuni said, employs 70 workers who are all locals in various divisions of the outlet.

“This is commendable, especially in view of the widespread unemployment across the country. As you all know the youth are the most affected by unemployment.

To address this, government continues to harmonise laws and regulations across all sectors to facilitate the business community including foreign investors with a view to optimise the private sectors’ role in the economic growth,” Shamukuni said.

He added that the opening of the shop could not have come at a better time, as it will contribute in no small measure to the diversification of the economy of the Chobe District and by extension the country.

“The Sefalana Group is a true Botswana company listed on the Botswana Stock Exchange with Batswana owning 93% of its shares hence this store is Botswana’s safe storage, which should be utilised well.

The company has spread throughout the country consisting of 28 retail supermarkets to date under the name Sefalana Cash and Carry and four Sefalana Hyper located in Gaborone, Mogoditshane, Mahalapye and Francistown,” Shamukuni said.

Shamukuni stated that the company has also managed to penetrate the outside market by operating in Namibia and Lesotho.

“With this massive investment, I encourage the citizens of this country to buy shares in the company for investment purposes. Furthermore, I urge Batswana in general to rise above being consumers only, and take advantage of this growth as it avails opportunities for the locals to be supplier of goods both fresh produce and fast moving consumer goods and not to be too reliant on government for job creation.

It is also gratifying and encouraging to witness the participation of citizens in the growth and diversification of the economy of their country,” he said.
