BPL prosecutors have written to Chiefs asking the club to show cause why they should not be charged after their midfielder, Arnold Mampori’s injury forced the cancellation of the game last Saturday in Francistown.

Chiefs had fielded only seven players after alerting the BPL and the Botswana Football Association (BFA) that they only had seven fit players for the play-off.

According to FIFA rules and regulations, a game cannot proceed with six players on one side. The play-off, meant to decide last season’s champions, failed to reach the halfway mark after Mampori’s head injury. Now the BPL prosecutors want to charge Chiefs over misconduct following the incident.

“What is misconduct? We have requested that they give us minutes of our meeting (with BFA, where Chiefs informed them about the number of available players), the match report from the match commissioner and the referee so that we make an informed decision,” Chiefs spokesperson, Clifford Mogomotsi said.

He said they are shocked that the match was sanctioned, but now the BPL turns around and threatens to charge them with misconduct.

“They should tell us which FIFA law did we violate? This is just a witch-hunt where some people want to clean their hands. We still maintain that our players were injured and are recuperating as we speak, including Mampori. Why should they rush to charge us instead of focusing on finishing the league?” Mogomotsi queried. The unending saga has thrown football into confusion with no league winners while a new season is expected to start in August or September.
