BDP Francistown region secretary, Raoboy Mpuang reportedly revealed in a leaked tape that he went to the hearing facing a serious charge of de-campaigning the party during the Phillip Matante-East by-election.

He said he appeared before the BDP disciplinary board aware that his charges were going to be dismissed and his suspension for 90 days from the party lifted.

“As a pro-Masisi operative I was told to honour the disciplinary hearing for the sake of it,” he said indicating that it was the work of the “party elders” who had assured him that he was off the hook.

This revelations were made in the process of impressing Barulaganye Baka Mooketsi of the Botswana Congress Party (BCP) whom Mpuang and his party colleague, Ditiro Majadibodu were trying to recruit to the BDP.

Mooketsi is a BCP operative from Botsalano ward who tried his luck in the 2014 general elections as a council candidate.

In a bid to possibly impress Mooketsi of the good things awaiting him if he defects to the BDP and become his council candidate in the 2019 general elections, Mpuang tried to reflect how life would be easy in the BDP once one joins the Masisi faction.

Mpuang however, seemingly went overboard and revealed way too much to a man who had not even promised to join his team.

Mooketsi was awe-struck by the fact that their conversation was held on a Sunday afternoon, whilst Mpuang’s hearing was scheduled for next Sunday, yet he already knew that his appearance would be a formality and he would be acquitted and discharged.

“The disciplinary committee does not want to seem to be favouring me, but they have informed me that they are not going to find me guilty,” Mpuang said in the conversation.

Mooketsi said he was left dumbfounded because it sounded like Mpuang was totally in control and had a serious disregard for serious processes like a disciplinary hearing, which seeks to correct wrongs by party members.

Mpuang claimed that he could not remember talking to Mooketsi in a recruitment process but indicated that he has been talking to many people.

“I can’t remember that conversation but I remember being with Mooketsi one of those days,” Mpuang said.

He emphasised that the party allows recruiting people to its fold as that is an ongoing exercise across the country.

Efforts to solicit comments from the party secretariat, hit a blank as the party’s secretary general, Botsalo Ntuane could not answer calls at press time.
