When their peers settled for hip-hop, kwaito or afro jazz, 25-year-old Bojosi Ntseane and 24-year-old Mimi Moje who are the founders of Harmonic Angel, chose a genre, which mostly promotes Setswana tales.

The young, vibrant and energetic Moje, who is the group’s vocalist, told Showbiz that due to their love for their mother language (Setswana), they chose to differ from other young people and opted to take the folklore jazz path in the music industry.

“We chose folk jazz because our music is based on true Setswana stories. In most of our songs you will find out that we use gatwe erile (once upon a time), which is a norm in our traditional story telling. This is also important because our stories are rich with poetry, tales and proverbs,” she said.

Moje said when they entered the music industry, they were not sure how things would turn out, but to their surprise their decision to perform folk jazz came naturally. Moje added that their first song Tswana Sa Re was inspired by George Swabi. She however explained that they added the Harmonic Angel touch to it making it more appealing to their publics.

“Swabi has been our mentor and has inspired us throughout our career and for that we respect him. When we started this genre, we were acoustic-based, but after some time we decided to add native poetry as a dimension to our music and we have grown since,” Moje said.Harmonic Angel intends to record an album in the near future. In the mean time, the group is thrilled with the reception from the public.

Since its establishment, Harmonic Angel has acquired a lot. It was the first group to win the Most Promising Live Band award during the President’s Day Competition last year.

The young women who say they are fulltime artists told Showbiz that they have performed at different events, which include Alliance Française’s biggest festival Feta de la Musique, Mascom Live Sessions and a few others.

They said if it was not for BotswanaCraft, who is their sponsor, their dream could have not become a reality. The young women explained that all their beautiful performances were made possible by the support from their families and friends.

Some of their songs are Hamba, Boleke, Ke a gana, Ntluntlu derived from a traditional game, Sekotsekara, Poela, Kau lele and Matogwe.
