Men allegedly rape, kill elderly woman

The incident happened in the wee hours of Sunday morning at Mabelete lands between Mahalapye and Bonwapitse. The woman had left to check her vegetable garden at the lands when the men attacked her.

Police Superintendent, Omphile Malemenyane said they received a report that morning from the woman’s neighbour at the lands. The 59-year-old man reported that he heard the deceased screaming for help.
When they arrived, the Mahalapye station commander said, the policer found the deceased woman lying unconsciously and undressed with a bloody wound on the forehead. She was alone when the attackers pounced on her.
“We discovered a brick that we suspect was used as a weapon to knock the deceased down at the scene. The woman was rushed to Mahalapye District Hospital where doctors certified her dead upon arrival,” Malemenyane said.
The police traced the suspects and arrested the two 23-year-old men at the same lands in the morning of the incident. The two, from Herero and Dilaene wards in Mahalapye are detained and will appear before the village magistrate to face charges.
Malemenyane warned farmers to ensure they are always accompanied when they visit their lands.
“These days it is not even safe to walk into the bush alone whether daytime or at night. It is safe to ensure we have company all the time when visiting our lands and cattleposts,” the police superintendent advised.
