Phikwe police investigate murder/suicide case

Addressing the media on Tuesday, Selebi-Phikwe police station commander, Victor Nlebesi explained that they got a call on Monday morning about the incident, adding that they found a rope on the deceased woman’s neck.

He added that their preliminary investigations reveal that the man might have choked the girlfriend to death before hanging himself, stating that they both come from Sefhophe village.

He stated that the deceased man left behind a suicide note that did not give reasons for his actions.

“The passion killing cases in my area have been low for quite sometime. This is the third case we have recorded since the beginning of the year,” said Nlebesi.

He said this is a wake up call to all key stakeholders to join hands and address the situation before it gets out of control as it did in the past.

Nlebesi explained that they managed to control the situation in the past through a quick response to threats to kill cases that were reported to them.

Furthermore, he indicated that most of the cases affect unmarried young couples.

He emphasised the need for all critical stakeholders to come on board and educate the boy-child on peacefully accepting the end of a relationship.

“I also urge private organisations to assist in the guidance of the boy-child so that they may know how to deal with their short tempers as well as how to overcome the hardships of a relationship at a tender age. This will significantly assist in grooming responsible men,” said Nlebesi.

Meanwhile, Nlebesi expressed concern over the escalating cases of house breaking and theft in the copper/nickel mining town and the neighbouring Mmadinare village.

“Our investigations have revealed that these thieves are capable of opening a closed window without breaking it and this is a clear indication of the poor quality of our window frames,” noted Nlebesi.

He further noted with concern that they have realised that there is a high market for stolen goods, thus slamming members of the public who buy these goods saying they encourage crime.

In addition, he implored the public to desist from leaving wallets in pockets when they sleep, highlighting that thieves can hook clothes from outside through the window.
