Motlhagodi says church leaders should be more responsible

He said this when officiating at the FGAC leadership meeting in Ratholo village recently.

He said that African churches are facing a challenge of building the society, spreading the word of God and helping in developing the country.

He said in the past it was the responsibility of chiefs and churches to run the country and help in its development, hence churches should still uphold that responsibility.

“Church leaders must put aside internal squabbles and focus on building a good church, as such this will help in bringing back the dignity of African churches. Churches that attract more members are those that are run properly, their leaders behaving in an acceptable way, how they help congregants, their dignity and how they preach the word of God,” said Motlhagodi.

The bishop added that most of the leaders have been given wrong responsibilities with their ranks not matching  what they do. He said churches must find a way that can mentor a pastor in a church.

Motlhagodi discouraged situations where pastors and other church leaders fight for positions in churches and gossip, saying it is a disgrace to African churches. He said his wish is to see leaders being respected with zero tolerance for internal squabbles in African churches.  “Since April 2008, there have been 44 conflicts in African churches and 40 have been resolved while four have not been resolved even today. In most cases we found out that the main causes of such misunderstandings are as a result of poor leadership, fighting for the church certificates, and other petty issues that are not expected from churches,” he said.

He said FGAC has 67 years of existence but it is still not highly recognised because of some leaders who have been given positions that they do not deserve.

The bishop encouraged church leaders to go to school and learn to do research. Meanwhile, Bishop Motlhagodi revealed that the OAIC is working on a policy that will control all church leaders to ensure that they behave in a suitable manner and do what they have been sent to do, as well as improving their working conditions.
