A Toyota Hilux double cab and Toyota station wagon collided around 2:30am, resulting in the death of a 47-year-old man.

Mochudi police station traffic officer, assistant superintendent, Onthusitse Keitumele said the deceased was the driver of the Toyota Hilux.

He told The Monitor that it appears the two vehicles that were travelling in opposite directions sideswiped each other. The driver of the Toyota Hilux lost control and the vehicle overturned. One of the passengers sustained a leg fracture and is admitted at Princess Marina Hospital.

He said the rest sustained minor injuries, and were treated and discharged yesterday.

“Investigations into the matter are ongoing to establish the cause of the accident. Only after we have completed our investigations, it is when we will be able to establish who was at fault,” he said.

In another incident, Keitumele said his station is investigating a hit and run car accident that occurred on Saturday at around 10pm in Mochudi.

He said a Honda Fit ran over a 37-year-old man who was trying to cross the road along Linchwe road near Security Systems offices. “Police are still looking for the driver of the Honda Fit car who fled and abandoned the car at the scene after hitting the victim,” he said.

Keitumele said the victim suffered fractures on both legs and was referred to Princess Marina Hospital where he is admitted. 

In other weekend accident, Mogoditshane police are investigating a case in which a soldier based at Sir Seretse Khama Barracks was hit by a car while crossing the road in front of the army base.

Mogoditshane police station commander, superintendent Russ Letsebe said the accident occurred near Jan Botswana around 8pm on Saturday.

He said the victim sustained serious head injuries and is admitted at Bokamoso Private Hospital.

“The driver of the car was tested for alcohol and emerged sober. We call on members of the public to pay attention when crossing the road and wear reflective clothes at night for easy visibility,” he said.

Letsebe said in yet another incident that occurred around 2am on Saturday, a man aged 26, sustained a thigh fracture after he lost control of his car, which overturned late in Gabane.

He said the car had three people on board and others sustained minor injuries.

Meanwhile, Central Police are investigating a case in which three students were hit by a car while crossing the road near Maoka Junior Secondary School on Friday. Central police station, assistant superintendent, Kgopolo Moshebashebi said the three, aged 10, 12 and 14 respectively, sustained fractures. “The trio was trying to cross the road in the morning on their way to school when they met their fate.

The 14-year-old girl was referred to Bokamoso Private Hospital while others are at Gaborone Private Hospital,” said Moshebashebi.
