Zapata said he was aware that GU chairperson, Rapula Okaile and other committee members are working hard to turn around the situation.

“Unfortunately, GU has wasted three weeks of pre-season. I hope to be back this weekend,” he said.

Zapata said before he left for his home country, he left a plan for the board members. He said he indicated that he wants to sign six players to beef up the squad.

The coach wanted four players from Orapa United and three from Mochudi Centre Chiefs.

He also had interest in three unnamed Township Rollers players but admitted it was going to be difficult to lure them, especially the team’s favourite, Segolame Boy.

Meanwhile, GU secretary general, City Senne confirmed that they owe Zapata a salary but refused to disclose the amount.

Senne said the club had also delayed paying players June salaries but were paid recently.

He said they are communicating with the coach on the progress they are making regarding his salary and are also working on flying the coach back to Botswana.

“The coach gave us a list of players that he wanted when he left, but unfortunately we have not signed any of them due to financial reasons. We have not even started pre-season training.

We are hopeful that as an experienced coach, he will come and catch up and also use the players we have to compete in the league,” said Senne.

He said they are still in talks with Zac Construction to continue sponsoring the club. Senne said Nicholas Zakhem’s departure came as a shock to all stakeholders at the club as it depended on him for survival. “It was like an earthquake,” he remarked.
