Speaking to journalists after his team defeated TAFIC by a solitary goal on Sunday, Mpote said the team is ready to compete.

“You will see us somewhere at the end of the season. The first six games will be very important. If we can do well in those games, I am confident that we will clinch the league title. Winning the league title is my main objective,” Mpote told Mmegi Sport.

United came close to being crowned league champions two seasons ago but faltered towards the end of the campaign, eventually losing out to Township Rollers.

Mpote has made it clear that he wants to end Popa’s dominance. He also noted that his national team commitments would not harm his ambitions to win the league.

“ I have a very strong technical team that has often done a good job during my absence. I am confident that they will continue doing a good job while I am away with the national team,” said Mpote.

“We had very good pre-season. We had three phases where we worked on endurance, strength and improving tactical application of our players. You could see that they looked very sharp, which is a sign that the players had a very good season,” he said.

The national Under-23 coach added that he is happy with his new signings.

Among the new players who started for the Ostriches on Sunday was Lawrence Nduga.

“This was the first game. I expected them to make mistakes. I think all the players controlled the game properly. The new players have settled in very quickly.”
