The PTT was appointed and launched in October 2015, in order to facilitate a national consultative process for the purpose of defining a long-term vision for Botswana. The task team was fully made up of different experts from across all sectors, with the following terms of reference:
- To mobilise Batswana to define their own long-term social, environmental, political and economic development aspirations
- To review all relevant background material on the subject (including the draft framework for a new long-term vision for Botswana) - To consult with members of the public on the subject through the press, meetings, seminars, etc, and invite submissions, either oral or written, by individuals or organisations
- To produce a new long-term vision document for Botswana reflecting the consensus that would have emerged from the consultations.
The main questions that were asked during the consultations were as follows:
- What kind of Botswana do we want to build by the year 2036 “looking at the issues of social development, culture, spiritual, economic, environment and governance?”
- What kind of person should a Motswana look like in 2036 in terms of social standing?
- In order to achieve these dreams and aspirations what should be done and by who?
The PTT was constituted around four thematic areas:
- Social and human upliftment
- Sustainable economic development
- Governance, peace and security
- Sustainable environment
