Shashe River Secondary School Worried By Poor Results

The school administration has already raised a red flag about the fallen academic performance of the school whose examination results used to be amongst the top.

Speaking to The Monitor last Friday, Lenah Lekgetho, a head of department at the school and coordinator for the coming 50th anniversary commemorations was openly concerned by the poor performance of the school.

The commemorations will be held under the theme ‘Celebrating the past, igniting the future: A call for stakeholder partnership’.Unpacking the theme, Lekgetho explained: “What we are saying is that as SRSS turns 50, we appreciate its contributions to the education and economy of the country. Its successes as it were in the past known.”

They also want to reflect where they are now as a school where they have not been performing well for the past five years.

“Our dream is to revive and take the school back to its glory days. We want to see the school back to where it belongs and that is, in the top 10 bracket of good performers,” stressed Lekgetho.

In that regard, Lekgetho has called upon all the stakeholders to join hands and particularly called upon the teachers, parents, the community and students to achieve the elusive target of improving the results.

For the past five years, the results at SRSS have been a concern with the school placed lowly at positions 20 and 24 out of about 28 senior secondary schools in the country.

One of the school’s endeavours to motivate both students and staff is to introduce a rewarding system that will recongnise individuals’ contribution to the school performance. The administration’s plan is to widen its pool of recognition to show that they have students who are doing their very best as well as staff.

Minister of Tertiary Education, Research, Science and Technology, Thapelo Olopeng will give a word of motivation and award prizes on the day.

Lekgetho has also confirmed that the school has received monetary donations and in kind such as computers, printers, projectors, laptops, electric stoves, revision books, merit badges and sponsoring of certain prizes.

She credits Debswana mining company, alumni, individuals and families for the donations.

SRSS management invites all former students, staff members, village leadership and parents to attend the auspicious occasion.
