The party’s vice president (VP), Wynter Mmolotsi confirmed to Mmegi today that Butale successfully underwent the surgery.

He said that Butale fell ill last Friday while attending activities of the Pan-African Parliament in the Northern African country.

“He was ultimately taken to hospital. Doctors conducted a test on him and established that he had to undergo urgent surgery,” he said of Butale.

Although Mmolotsi was not willing to divulge the nature of Butale’s illness, there are reports that the legislator’s emergency surgery was meant to tackle a heart condition, which doctors feared could lead to a heart attack.

Mmolotsi added that Butale is expected to be released by Friday and subsequently travel back to Botswana.

“He is in a stable condition. He is just waiting for clearance from doctors in order to return home.”

Butale, whose phone rang unanswered, is also a member of the Pan African Parliament and is former Member of Parliament for Gaborone Central.
