Koufie is credited for laying the foundation for a successful Zebras, which excelled under Jelusic Veselin before a first-ever Africa Cup of Nations qualifier was achieved in 2012.

“Ben Koufie is the father of modern football in Botswana.

He taught our administrators that football results are a result of proper planning.  During his tenure, particularly when he was developing our strategy, he attracted a lot of criticism, (but) when his plan started to bear fruit, a lot of people started to appreciate his enormous contribution to Botswana football.

“His legacy continues through those he trained, particularly referees and coaches.  May his soul rest in peace,” Sebego said.

The respected Koufie was BFA technical director between 1992 and 2001.  He also had a stint as Zimbabwe’s technical advisor where he famously predicted that the country would not make it to any major competition “even with a coach from the moon”.

Zimbabwe went on to have near misses until the ghost was exorcised in 2004 with a first qualification to the Africa Cup of Nations finals.

Koufie also served as the Ghana Football Association president between 2001 and 2003.
