Venson- Moitoi’s presence at the launch of Mmusi Kgafela in Mochudi East over the weekend brought joy to the BDP, ending doubts that she could be on her way out. She pulled out of the presidential race a few hours before elections earlier this year in Kang citing unlevel playing field.

In a short speech she made at the launch, Venson-Moitoi admitted that she had been mad at the party’s president Mokgweetsi Masisi. She added that the peace and tranquility enjoyed by Batswana made it possible for her to stand against the President.

Contacted for comment on her appearance, Venson- Moitoi said there was nothing unusual about her attendance of the launch as she never said anything about quitting her party.

Her husband, Prince Moitoi who joined BDP not long ago has since quit the party and is now the Botswana Movement for Democracy parliamentary candidate for Serowe South where she has been serving. Masisi removed Venson- Moitoi from her ministerial role at the helm of Local Government and Rural Development ministerial post in December, just a day after she announced she would be challenging him for the presidency.

One of her biggest supporters was former president Ian Khama who had launched an attack on his predecessor Masisi. When Khama alongside others who had been supporting her quit the BDP for Botswana Patriotic Front (BPF) that led to speculation about her future and that she would join the new party.

However, Venson- Moitoi kept everybody guessing about her political future.

But BPF president, Biggie Butale said they had no expectation that she would join them. “She has never attended any of our meetings nor made any promises that she would join our party. We had also not courted her to join our party affording her freedom to choose what she wants to do with her political career.”
