The AP was dealt a major blow over the weekend when it emerged that Kgari has quit the party to join the Umbrella for Democratic Change (UDC). Until he resigned, Kgari was billed to represent the AP in Maun East at the upcoming general election.

He was officially unveiled as the candidate for the AP a few months ago.  Kgari has since pledged his support for Goretetse Kekgonegile who is the UDC parliamentary candidate for Maun East.

“We have given the party’s lower structures in Maun East the liberty to handle the matter (Kgari’s resignation) and assess the political environment in the area. Kgari resigned on Friday night without advancing any reason.  We hope that the lower structures will assess issues on the ground.  The lower structures will then issue a report to the party executive in relation to the prevailing circumstances in Maun East.  The findings will guide the party executive in terms of determining if the party should field a candidate or not,” AP secretary general Phenyo Butale said.

He added, “At the moment it is safe to say that there is a possibility that we may or may not field a candidate for the general election in Maun East”.

The AP is also racing against time because the Independent Electoral Commission (IEC) has set September 26, 2019 as the day for nomination of those wishing to represent various political parties in the elections.
