This year’s theme for the pageant, ‘the significance of a woman in the society’, is in line with the organisation’s objectives of building the girl-child.

The event started on a high note with the 12 finalists parading their unique designs.  The young women were equally beautiful and confident on stage.  It was difficult to predict the winner at that stage. After the fifth parade, the girls were shortlisted to the Top Nine, then Top Five and lastly Top Three where now the remaining queens were chosen.

The Top Three young women were asked the same question.  The decider question read as “which project will you embark on and why if you win this crown tonight?” Makoba impressed the judge with her answer. “As I will be taking this crown today, I will take part of my time and spend it with children with learning disabilities.

The reason I want to help these children is because everyday people say the children are the future generation and leaders of tomorrow, but they are excluding these children because the latter are not academically successful. I am going to take my time every Friday and visit a primary school,” she said.

The guest speaker at the event, chief communications officer of Mascom Wireless, Tebogo Lebotse-Sebego who emphasised that women are stronger than they think and should be treated with love and respect.

She encouraged the community to support this initiative because it does not only build the girl-child but contributes to community development.

For her part, the director of the pageant Lebopo Bulayani said they are not only growing but also working towards making Miss Independence Kgatleng a national brand, which will be able to reach out to all parts of Botswana. The way we work hard soon we will be telling the nation great news,” she added.

Bulayani encouraged girl children to believe in themselves and to make informed decisions in life.
