He announced his intentions this week and joins incumbent, Tebogo Sebego and Maclean Letshwiti in the race to grab football’s most powerful position. Mantswe enters a polarised environment with football in a crisis as BFA affiliates prepare to go to the polls at the end of next month.

Mantswe told Mmegi Sport yesterday that he has not entered the race due to the crisis in football, but as a clarion call to serve the game.

“It is not late for me to enter the race. There is still a month to go. I am here to add a voice and allow Batswana to choose. I can contribute in a small way. I am not here to blame people. You cannot just blame without participating,” Mantswe said.

He said his stint in the BPL, before he was re-called earlier this year, had given him insights into challenges facing football. “We are going to borrow heavily from the new constitution. These (the constitution) are some of the positives we see from (Tebogo) Sebego’s administration. We cannot say someone is useless,” he said, in what is seen as a sharp contrast to his rival, Letshwiti’s blunt approach of criticising the current leadership.

Mantswe said his joining of the race as the BFA presidency “is not inheritance” and anyone is free to run.

He said they will focus on their key areas once elected, based on the expertise that his team brings.
