Molefhi made the plea on Friday at Phikwe Primary School’s victory celebrations for the class of 2015, when responding to the SELEBO sub-region Chief Education Officer, Lillian Matshameko’s concern that schools were currently facing challenges of drug abuse by students.

Molefhi said naming drug dealers to face the wrath of the law would be an effective solution to addressing the situation. He urged students to desist from abusing drugs and alcohol, advising them to take their education seriously.

Molefhi further slammed parents who cover up for men who impregnate under-age girls, stating that he recently warned his constituents that such parents would find themselves on the wrong side of the law if they were caught.

For his part, Selebi-Phikwe West MP Dithapelo Keorapetse slammed the act of selling drugs to students and suggested that the country should consider capital punishment or life imprisonment for the perpetrators. Matshameko had earlier revealed that two students were suspended from a certain school in the region after being found in possession of illegal drugs.

“I am not going to give any details about who the students are or the school they come from,” said Matshameko.

She further blamed drug abuse by students on peer pressure saying parental intervention is vital on the matter, therefore calling on parents to always monitor the kind of friends their children keep.

Furthermore, Matshameko stated that parental participation on children’s schoolwork will prevent the current trend where students’ academic performance drop drastically when they get to junior schools.

Phikwe Primary School scooped position 1 in the 2015 PSLE results in the SELEBO sub-region, registering a pass rate of 95.7%, something that the school head Mariam Motshegwa said was a result of teachers’ hard work and sacrifices as well as students’ cooperation.

She vowed to defend the title this year, highlighting that the school has a history of good academic performance as it has recorded a pass rate of more than 90% for the past five years. Meanwhile, the town’s education committee chairperson, Councillor for Ikageleng ward, Mmapula Mathole indicated that stakeholder’s solidarity has immensely contributed to the outstanding academic performance in public schools.

She further stated that Selebi-Phikwe Town Council is diligent in finding a solution to the teachers’ accommodation shortage, adding that they recently handed over some houses to teachers, while others are under construction. Mathole said they were hopeful that the economic stimulus programme would address the accommodation challenge and lack of resources in schools in the area.
