Katumbela was addressing the media here on Friday, ahead of the eighth instalment of the tournament scheduled for July 30 and 31 at the Phikwe Golf Club. Katumbela said SPEDU is now on board as a second major sponsor, and with a packed line up of events, only success beckons. Newly opened, Hotel Selebi has also come on board.

For the past seven years, Letsatsi Renewable Energy has been the sole sponsor.

More golfers are expected to grace this year’s spectacle and with improved prize money.

Katumbela said the two-day event will feature a youth empowerment workshop by Soprano Biking Club from South Africa, a family fun day as well as a music concert. “The workshop will empower Selebi-Phikwe youth with knowledge on Road Safety and Drug and Alcohol Abuse,” he said, adding that its facilitators are professional career people and entrepreneurs whose aim is to “encourage the spirit of Botho and support charitable causes.”

For her part, SPEDU’s public relations officer, Punah Molebatsi revealed that they will sponsor the tournament to the tune of P150,000. She noted that their move was partly motivated by ‘threats’ that the tournament might relocate to a different town.

Molebatsi added that the tournament is a noble cause, which they would want to be associated with, adding that they hope to sponsor the event again next year, as their mandate is to contribute to the livelihoods of the communities residing in the SPEDU region.

Meanwhile, Hotel Selebi general manager, Headman Murangi revealed sponsorship of P21,100 worth of accommodation for organisers and a conference venue. He emphasised the need for businesses to support local communities they operate in.
