Speaking at a dinner held in honour of the World Telecommunications and Information Society Day, director of corporate affairs, Lepata Mafa-Nthomola said that Orange recently increased its broadband coverage in Thamaga and upgraded the existing 2G network technology to the faster 3G one

Mafa-Nthomola said that as players and contributors in the industry it is the responsibility of all network providers to find ways of unlocking the potential of ICT so that young innovators, entrepreneurs, and start-ups can innovative and develop practical solutions to the social and economic challenges in the country.

“At Orange Botswana we have embraced our responsibility of facilitating the functioning and sustainability of digital entrepreneurship.

Over the years we have introduced various initiatives to propel digital entrepreneurship.  We have initiatives such as the MAgri, Orange Social Venture Prize and the Developers challenge just to name a few,” she said. Orange has over the years unearthed talent in digital entrepreneurship and some of the known agriculture applications they have supported include ModisaR and MAgri.

MAgri is an application designed by a young digital start-up to offer farmers a platform to use with any mobile phone to get connected to updates from the Ministry of Agriculture, merchants such as BMC, BAMB, LEA, Agri Shop, all in the comfort of their homes. “Thamaga youths are no different from the youths who developed the applications mentioned. As Orange we see potential for partnerships and opportunities for budding ICT entrepreneurs in Thamaga.

And with faster connectivity in Thamaga, ICT start-ups will be able to improve not only their lives but also the lives of their peers in and around Thamaga,” she said.
