The worlds favourite fish

It is currently the world’s favourite as it is sitting pretty at the top of box office. Well, the name of this new experience is Finding Dory and it will make you remember the 2003 animation blockbuster Finding Nemo. Thumbs up to you then because you will not have a hard time following Finding Dory as it is the sequel to that movie. This new experience is a 2016 3D computer-animated comedy adventure also crafted by the same director from the predecessor film, that being Andrew Stanton.  This time around Amnesia or memory loss is the focal point and catalyst of all fun. Finding Dory lets all loose as “the big screen’s favourite forgetful blue tang Dory (voice of Ellen DeGeneres), who is living happily in the reef with Marlin (voice of Albert Brooks) and Nemo (voice of Hayden Rolence). When Dory suddenly remembers that she has a family out there who may be looking for her, the trio takes off on a life-changing adventure across the ocean to California’s prestigious Marine Life Institute (MLI), a rehabilitation centre and aquarium. In an effort to find her mom (voice of Diane Keaton) and dad (voice of Eugene Levy), Dory enlists the help of three of the MLI’s most intriguing residents: Hank (voice of Ed O’Neill), a cantankerous octopus who frequently gives employees the slip; Bailey (voice of Ty Burrell), a beluga whale who is convinced his biological sonar skills are on the fritz and Destiny (voice of Kaitlin Olson), a near-sighted whale shark. Deftly navigating the complex inner workings of the MLI, Dory and her friends discover the magic within their flaws, friendships and family. Some characters from Finding Nemo like Ellen DeGeneres (Dory voice), Albert Brooks (Marlin voice) have reprised their roles maintaining consistency in the film. Whilst on the other hand the cast has also added new reinforcements like Ed O’Neill

(Octopus Hank voice) among others just to name a few.

Action

Where do I begin? I will start with the reason why our ribs hurt because of the comedy. Cartoons really go overboard exaggerating small life problems into amusing moments. For instance, protagonist fish cartoon Dory is just a handful. Movie fanatics were blown away watching a fish with mental issues. She would wake up Marlin thrice in one space forgetting each time she does so whilst tickling the audience beyond normal. Moving on, the adventure is pretty good, exhilarating for a fact because the script is also very audacious. Setting up a near impossible mission, for instance, a small fish deep in the ocean tries to swim across the globe towards destiny. How long will it take and will it make some of the good elements of suspense? Finding Dory is such a good imagination teaser. Imagine the odds in real life, maybe for an ant traipsing its way as far as Maun from Gabs. On the other hand, not mentioning the new stars in the film would be a crime I would get punished for life. Dory is the star of her own show with her mental demons, amnesia! There are quite a few characters who bring crazy in a different way also. There is Hank the Octopus (my personal favourite), a rogue octopus with spy and camouflage abilities constantly sneaking around the MLI aquariums, a bunch of naughty seals speaking with British accent and zombie-looking birds. So really, the animators explored almost everything to generate humour. That brings me to another fun fact about Finding Dory, the stunts which compliment the action. It might be a comedy but the film explodes into cinema as the animals redefine the term crazy. Dory and the united gang sneak around drainage pipes, flying fish then driving baby carriages then eventually needing police road blocks. This film is that creative, fish that cause a stir both in the Ocean and on land while listening to sounds of Barry White can only be stopped by police road block. The new twist is that unlike in Finding Nemo edition this time Dory is the main character as last time it was Marlin. The film taps into themes like courage, family, friendship and confidence as it relays important messages. After watching Finding Dory it taught me how to relate better with people who have memory loss or any other disability for that matter. All thanks to a fish, Dory. Lastly this animation is very vibrant as the cinematography and setting is a lively aquatic experience. It portrays the beauty of the sea under-bed and urban; it has no dull or dark moments. It is a must see for family viewing.

Quotes

From the movie that shed the humour

Dory (to Marlin): “I remembered something important but I can’t remember what it is”

Destiny to Dory speaking wale: “Swiiiiimmmm Doooory theeeree isssss daaangerr coomiing” (Apparently according to the movie dragging words is wale language)

Reception

This animation is currently the biggest movie in the world right now at #1 at box office. According to box office Finding Dory premiered worldwide this past weekend and earned a whooping $135 million in the US and again generated another $50 million in off shore countries like Botswana. By Wednesday (June 22) after six days on circuit it had a worldwide sum of $205 million. Finding Dory is the sixth film to reach #1 in 2016 after The Good Dinosaur, Kung Fu Panda 3, Zootopia, Jungle Book and Angry Birds. Clearly animation has a good fan base.
