Makwala was tipped to clinch the sportsman of the year award and ultimately grab the sportsperson of the year gong, but was pipped by boxer, Zibani Chikanda and then Karabo Sibanda who scooped the big prize.

“I am just ok about the awards. I was not expecting anything regarding the award because I long saw it coming. It was obvious on my side,” said Makwala who is in Durban for the Africa Senior Championships.

Makwala, who holds all national sprint records, had a stellar 2015, including breaking the 400m record. He has qualified for the Olympic games in August.

But despite stunning performances, Makwala has failed to convince local judges that he deserves a place among the best after he was again snubbed during the weekend’s BNSC awards.

BNSC chairperson, Solly Reikeletseng told Mmegi Sport that Makwala did not meet the criteria. He said there was a selection panel that decided on the winners.

“We have a criteria that an athlete has to meet for them to be given an award. Unfortunately, Makwala did not meet the criteria. We treat all our athletes equally. We love Makwala,” said Reikeletseng

Botswana Athletics Association (BAA) vice president, Glody Dube is still finding it difficult to digest the snub. He said the association submitted Makwala’s name as he was the best in athletics. He said they believe Makwala had a good year and continues to be on top form.

“I do not know what they mean by saying he failed to meet the criteria. It means he is going to continue missing out on the awards,” he said. Dube said such a trend would demoralise Makwala. He said the selection panel is compromised as it comprises people from other sporting codes and that leads to bias.
