Ghanzi duo murder trial adjourns

The two accused persons are alleged to have on January 31, 2014 at Leon Vorster’s farm in Ghanzi, sexually assaulted their employer before killing her.

The two, who were employed at Vorster’s farm as farm labourers, are alleged to have robbed Reinette Vorster of a Toyota Hilux valued at P300,000, two cellphones and cash amounting to P11,000. They are alleged to have used violence when committing the offence.

The state alleges that the duo proceeded to murder Reinette before torching the vehicle together with her body. The two men also face a count of malicious damage to property.

Kgalalelo was arrested on February 3 at Vorster’s farm while Mpe was arrested the following day in connection with the incident. The two are remanded in custody.

The state intends to call 18 witnesses. Eight witnesses including the Ghanzi district detective superintendent and independent witnesses have already given their testimony of the fateful day. More witnesses including a pathologist and the investigating officer are expected to give their evidence on July 26-28.

The case was initially set to be concluded within five days but some days could not be utilised due to court reschedules.

On the defence team, Gijima Archibald represents Kgalalelo whilst Themba Joina represents Mpe. Charles Tlhaganyane and Lesibo Emang of Directorate of Public Prosecutions (DPP) represent the state.

“I will use some days from my court vacation to see to it that this matter is completed,” Tafa said.
