Driver threatens to kill school bursar

According to the Letlhakane police station commander, superintendent Michael Maphephu the dispute ensued on Tuesday after the outraged driver demanded overtime payments from the school bursar.

Apparently, the driver wanted to be paid for overtime but the two failed to reach an agreement, which led to an argument.

“The driver then lost his temper and decided to lock the bursar together with another teacher in the office. He then took a shovel threatening to cut the bursar into pieces.

Fortunately, the teacher who was with the bursar in the office managed to grab the shovel from the driver saving the bursar,” he said.

Maphephu said they are holding the driver in custody and he will appear in court today.

He advised people to remain calm when confronted by situations to avoid making drastic decisions.

Meanwhile, Maphephu has said a 33-year-old man was killed in a car accident last week after he lost control of his Toyota land cruiser and hit a tree along the Francistown–Letlhakane road where he died on the spot.

In another separate case, four cars were also involved in an accident along the Francistown-Letlhakane road on Saturday after one car, which came from the Francistown direction, veered across the road and hit a cow.

“The other two cars that were passing stopped along the road in order to lend a helping hand when the third car which was coming towards the direction of the two cars hit them from behind forcing them out of the road causing another accident.

Fortunately, there were neither fatalities nor any injuries,” he said.

He noted that it was very common that whenever people try to lend a hand in an accident, they park their cars on the road, which is very dangerous as it can cause accidents of such nature.  Maphephu added that they are troubled by the rising number of accidents, adding that in his area they have recorded six fatalities in five accidents since the beginning of the year.

“Looking at the fact that it is mid-year, the record is very bad as we continue to lose more lives to car accidents.

We can only advice people to be extra careful when driving more especially in villages where there is a lot of livestock movement,” Maphephu said.
