Cycling duo to ride for the needy

He said the journey would commence on July 2 and is expected to last seven days when they reach their destination, Borolong, on July 9. He said those interested in joining the race, for any distance, can purchase tickets for P50 at the launch.

“We are calling out for interested individuals to join us at the launch and buy tickets to join us when we depart the following day,” Mlambo said.  From Gaborone the cyclists will travel through villages along the A1 road until they reach Francistown on July 9.

“We have identified a needy person in our village who has disabilities, whom we want to give dignity by building a house for her.  Currently our beneficiary resides elsewhere in the village hence we found it fit to give her one of the basic needs being shelter,” said Mlambo.

He said their idea is inspired by one of the country’s Vision 2016 pillars of being ‘A just, compassionate and caring nation’ as well as the President’s call to give to the needy.

“As one of our own, even though we do not have money, we found it fit for us to cycle, raise funds and ask for donations to build her a house,” said Mlambo, adding that the beneficiary’s father donated a residential plot for development.

Mlambo said they recently received a donation of two bikes each worth P8,000 from Manila Investments and a cycling kit worth P4,000 from Tabona Mabalane both from Borolong. “Manila Investments have also donated a backup car for the entire trip and have also promised to take care of our accommodation expenses along the way where we do not have lodging.  The Muslim youth movement has pledged P5,000 to be presented at the launch,” Mlambo said.

Village resident and owner of Events Live, Gregory Sekga designed and donated posters, banners, tickets, water bottles and a PA (Public Address) system to be used at the house’s handing over ceremony.

“Another resident and owner of Boikhutso Supermarket, Mmilili Phillime donated red bull energy drinks.  BMS and Borolong hardware north donated building materials and Haskins & Sons have donated five doors.  Golden Holdings have donated four door-frames and Furnmart furniture donated a bed and wardrobe,” said Mlambo.  Adansonia Hotel has provided accommodation for the cyclists. Mlambo pleaded for assistance towards making the event a success.
