At the party national executive committee meeting on Sunday, the issue dominated the discussions. According to a source, there was no consensus on the issue after three of the deliberations and the meeting was called off.

“The Gaolathe team maintained that Pilane’s membership was fraudulently awarded or obtained. It accused the secretariat of having misdirected the branches, which admitted or gave him membership while the Mangole team believes that Pilane is a legitimate member. The committee agreed that their next meeting should be held in Maun where it will only address the Pilane issue,” the source said.

Efforts to get comment from the BMD leadership were not successful as BMD secretary general Gilbert Mangole and vice president Wynter Mmolotsi were not answering their phones at the time of going to press.

For his part, the BMD chairperson Nehemiah Modubule said: “I am travelling and I can hardly hear you.”

Although this was a NEC meeting, BMD members gathered at the party office to witness the outcome of the meeeting. Before the meeting, there was a rumour that the NEC, which is mostly controlled by Mangole and Modubule, copuld suspend some NEC members aligned to the party president Ndaba Gaolathe and his vice Mmolotsi.

The other issue that the party members were anxiously waiting for was the banning of the presidential tour.

The BMD president and his vice have recently been touring the constituencies updating members about the problems that had befallen the party.
