BSE in public education drive

Tsheole was answering a question from the floor at a seminar organised by BW YALI Network recently on their public education and concerns on Batswana still not knowing much about the mandate of the BSE.

The CEO said they participate in various programmes in the media almost every day to disseminate information about shares, the trading of shares, and the stock market itself.

BSE uses newspapers, radio and television as well as various platforms of social media, he added.

The CEO said they also accept invitations to seminars, workshops and other functions to share information about their mandate as the BSE. Tsheole is of the view that sometimes the problem is ignorance.

“It is sometimes very difficult to teach people about investment when they do not even know anything about saving,” said Tsheole. He added that sometimes people tend to just walk into a bank and open an account without even knowing what they will reap in return.

Tsheole said they still offer information for free as the BSE while in other countries people have to pay to access particular information.

He added that he did not understand what prevents Batswana from accessing such information.

Tsheole, however, said there are other institutions such as regulatory bodies and banks that help them in teaching the public about shares and investment.

He also told attendants that shares are a viable investment option for young people.

“One just has to analyse the companies listed on the stock market and choose the one they want to invest in. You need to build wealth while still young.

Nothing can stop you from starting companies that will eventually list on the BSE,” he added. He said when one had bought shares in a particular company, it means they own part of the company.

They receive part of the company’s proceeds in the form of dividends, said Tsheole.

The shareholder also has a voice in the running of the company, he added.

He also said the regulatory role of the stock exchange gives confidence and protection to both investors and the companies.
