The auditions took place at Cresta Lodge on Saturday and Sunday. The tryouts had already taken place in Francistown, Lobatse, Palapye, Selebi-Phikwe and Maun.

Saturday morning had a big number of aspiring contestants already lined up to try their luck at becoming the next Miss Botswana.

The young women went into the audition room one by one where they were assessed by a panel of judges.

The panel included modelling experts; Dorcas Thobega, Bogadi Nwako, Tlhomamo Moje and Miss Botswana 2012, Tapiwa Preston.

The majority of the young women possessed required qualities, which made the audition more competitive. Most of the hopefuls met the required height, which is a minimum of 1.67 metres.

“There is a lot of competition in Gaborone as you can see. They came in big numbers compared to other places we have been,” said Thobega, who is also the pageant’s coordinator.

She stated that despite the competition, it will not be difficult for the judges to come up with the final number as they are specifically scouting for certain elements within the hopefuls.

The judging panel looked at elements such as confidence, personality, demeanour, body fitness, sense of style, beauty, conversational skills and talent.

Thobega said the final number of aspiring candidates from the Gaborone auditions would be determined by the number of hopefuls who would have auditioned.

More than 30 candidates have already been selected from auditions conducted in other parts of the country.

The team after the Gaborone auditions will screen selected candidates, to come up with 30 Miss Botswana hopefuls who will make it to the next level of the contest, which is the bootcamp.

The Miss Botswana 2016 bootcamp is set to start on June 24.

This year, the Miss Botswana grand finale will be held on July 29 at Gaborone International Convention Centre.
